It's safe to say the Jacksonville Jaguars aren't exactly one of the "role model" organizations that other organizations look up to. But, they are trying to become that, and they are doing so by grabbing other coaches and front office members who come from those organizations that people look up to. They have now done that with Liam Coen as the head coach, and the former offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and continued that with James Gladstone, the general manager who was formerly in the front office of the Los Angeles Rams.
Now, will this work? Who knows. Honestly, no one knows. There isn't one person who isn't being paid by the Jaguars that should say yes, it will 100% work because we just don't know. But, are these moves they have made, smart ones? Yes.
They are trying to pick up bits and pieces from successful franchises around the NFL and apply that to their team. Well, Gladstone is bringing expertise and experience from the Rams with so many different situations, including a situation where they bought and traded for a ton of their players, and built a team with very few first-round picks, but also a situation over the last few years where they drafted some great talent in Los Angeles.
He's looking to bring parts of that to Jacksonville during his first-ever tenure as a GM.
"I think, A, the adaptability that shows amongst the leadership group in Los Angeles and one that we'll look to embody here, knowing that this is an ever-evolving landscape in the NFL and the importance of changing and being ahead of the curve in terms of what success looks like," Gladstone said at his introductory press conference.
"I think beyond that, I see a lot of parallels to really my time with the Los Angeles Rams and the current moment in time here with the Jacksonville Jaguars, in particular dating back to sort of the inflection point in 2017 when the Los Angeles Rams were coming off a four-win season, hired a dynamic and resilient head coach [Rams Head Coach Sean McVay], and were able to follow that up with a successful season and successful seasons since. So really going to tap into all those years of experience and the different sorts of modes of operation and models that we deployed while applying here.”
The Jaguars need some of that — guys who know how to build a winning football team in more than one way, or as Gladstone called it, adaptability. And, just days after his press conference introducing himself and his family, he is already at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts but also the NFL Combine.
At the combine, he will talk to the media again, talk to some players, and really start the process of putting together a successful team, similar to the way he did in Los Angeles. How that is yet, we really don't know. But, it should be fun to watch from afar.
