When the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Liam Coen, you kind of knew that he was going to put together a young staff that had some of the brightest minds in football. You saw that almost immediately with the hire of the defensive coordinator in Anthony Campanile, and of course, immediately followed by offensive coordinator Grant Udinski.
Guys like Udinski have to have brilliant football minds and something else that sticks out to the franchise, or else they wouldn't target him. Everyone in this game has a brilliant football mind, but it's about your philosophy and beliefs. Guys like Udinski have something a little extra to them, though. They have to, because this is a guy that made the jump from assistant quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.
And this is also a guy that not many people probably know about. Udinski was a huge part of the Minnesota Vikings' success in 2024, and he could have the same effect on the Jaguars in 2025.
So, who is Grant Udinski? I asked A to Z Sports' Minnesota Vikings beat writer Tyler Forness that exact question. He let me know what the Jaguars can expect to get from Udinski.
The Jaguars are getting a wunderkind in Grant Udinski. Having just turned 29, Udinski hasn't been a full-position coach to date, but his meteoric rise isn't a surprise. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has said that he was set to be an offensive coordinator before the age of 30. Udinski is a creative mind who will bring a vertical passing structure similar to both O'Connell and Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams head coach) to Jacksonville. He's given a lot of credit for the success and growth of Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold, and J.J. McCarthy. Pairing him with Liam Coen and Trevor Lawrence is a recipe for success both short and long-term. However, don't be surprised if Udinski is an NFL head coach relatively quickly.
The Jaguars are going young, but with guys that have proven results. The Vikings were not expected to finish last season as one of the top-four teams in the league, yet, regular season record-wise, they were. And they did it without a star at quarterback, who just so happened to have his career revitalized.
Udinski will be a great fit with Coen. And, who knows, the two of them may collaborate and become an amazing duo when it comes to how this offense looks in 2025.
