Let's get this out of the way in the beginning. This is not something that Detroit Lions fans need to even think about right now. Goff is the Lions guy and is going to be the Lions guy for a long time.

With that said, some day there will come a time when Jared Goff is going to be an older quarterback and he's not going to be able to do it at the level he's at right now. Father time is undefeated in the NFL.

On Thursday, Goff went on the Glue Guys podcast and talked about the value of a good backup quarterback and talked about what it mans to an older player in that position. After hearing this, it became clear that when the Lions eventually get their quarterback of the future, Goff needs to be that guy's backup.

The crux of the conversation was about Goff being a rookie with the Rams and replacing Case Keenum and how Keenum handled it so well and went on to help Goff a lot and how much Goff appreciated that. Then he said this part and it really sold the idea of having an older Goff helping the Lions' future QB.

"He has the ability, like you said, to drop the ego too. Like he knows he's coming in to help the starter now, right? He still is balling his ass off in practice, like he's trying to tear the defense apart and scout team. But there's a chemistry in the quarterback room where, like, there is one guy in charge, there should be, and you need to know where you fit in that. And he certainly knows. And I think a lot of times guys right at the end of their career don't want to give into that at all, and then they don't get the opportunities anymore. And it sucks. And it's not, you know, the way it should be, or how it's supposed to be, but it's the reality. These guys don't want to sign guys that are looking to play when they're just trying to help the young guy learn how to play. And I think that piece by Case, not that he doesn't want to play, he will play if he has to, I don't want to speak for Case too much, but I think he knows that his value is so grand in what he provides to a young quarterback."

I mean that awareness right there is what you're looking for in a quarterback. Like we said, father time is undefeated and some guys are just unwilling to accept that. For Goff, it looks like he would be willing to accept that and would be totally open to being a guy that can help shepherd in the future of the Lions organization if he winds up being one of those players who gets replaced by a younger player someday. Pretty refreshing stuff.
