Just like in 2023, the Lions have a shot at an available veteran edge rusher, this one actually has ties to the coaching staff and is a former All-Pro though

The Detroit Lions made a big trade at the NFL trade deadline when they brought in Za'Darius Smith. Still, it felt like the Lions should grab an extra guy at the deadline and they didn't. The team should be ok, but right now they're in a place where extra depth certainly wouldn't hurt at all.

Last November the Lions signed veteran pass rusher Bruce Irvin and he spent a couple months with the team. While he only played two games and logged one sack it was a move worth making for the Lions. Now they have a chance to do something similar again this year, only this time it's a guy that has some history with position coaches on the Lions staff and used to be one of the top edge rushers in the NFL.

Pierre-Paul, who is actually younger than Irvin was when the Lions signed him, is looking for another shot in the NFL. While he didn't play a lot in 2023, he was just a starter for the Ravens in 2022 and played fairly well. He had 22 pressures and four sacks on 555 snaps.

The big thing is that he had a nice balance in stopping the run and rushing the passer. That is the thing the Lions are always looking for.

Pierre-Paul played with Lions linebacker coach Kelvin Shepherd in New York and he won a Super Bowl along with Antwan Randle-El when Randle-El was coaching for the Bucs. So there's some guys on the staff that have experience with him and know what to expect from him from both a player and person standpoint.

It's worth a shot and like we said, this is something the Lions have a history of doing. Pierre-Paul is not going to be a starter and he'll spend his early days on the practice squad, but maybe he can show out on elevations and get a chance to be a part of the rotation.
