We knew that Jayden Daniels was different as a rookie in many ways for the Washington Commanders, but he revealed the truth about his injury last year, and no one should ever question his heart and will.

There’s one play from last season that no one will ever forget that just became more memorable thanks to Daniels doing something that others wouldn’t have been able to do. He fought through a severe injury, made history along the way, and put the rest of the league on notice.

The rib injury was worse than expected

Daniels went down after a long run against the Carolina Panthers in the first quarter, and he was out for the remainder of the game. Marcus Mariota came in and won the game for the Commanders, but fans were still worried about the health of Daniels. Everyone speculated the entire next week just how bad the injury was and wondered if Daniels would play in the primetime game against the Bears.

Sure enough, Daniels not only played an intensely close and physical game against the Bears, but he also shocked the world with a walk-off Hail Mary to win the game. The craziest part of it all is that he launched that final pass with a broken rib.

Daniels revealed to Justin Jefferson and Saquon Barkley in a recent video from the NFL promoting Madden 26 that he did have a broken rib after going down against the Panthers.

Everyone knew that Daniels was hurt and didn’t look comfortable at times, but no one knew that he fought through a broken rib and still played lights out. Launching a Hail Mary throw 65 yards to win the game with a broken rib is legacy-type material for the franchise quarterback. There’s no telling how long he felt the effects of the broken rib, but he still won Rookie of the Year by the end of the season and led the team to the NFC Championship game.

Daniels made it a point to get bigger in the offseason so he could absorb hits better than he did last year, and he showed up noticeably bigger at camp. That’s a veteran mindset for a younger player who strives to be the best he can be for his team and his own body. Another season in offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s offense and a bigger frame could poise him for a bigger, healthier season.
