The Buffalo Bills handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the 2024 season on Sunday, and much of that was due to the incredible efforts by Josh Allen.
The Bills quarterback is a hard guy to defend against, and he proved that over and over again. But there was one play that truly stood out.
And that was when Buffalo went for it on 4th & 2 with less than two and a half minutes remaining. Had they not converted, they would have given Patrick Mahomes perfect field position. But Allen did what he does best, and that's extent plays with his legs.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked about this specific play and how his defensive lines balances trying to make a play with preventing Allen from scrambling.
What ended up happening was Allen not only scrambled for the first down, but actually for a touchdown that put the Bills up by two scores. However, Reid still went to bat for the defensive line.
“It’s a tough thing to do. I mean, especially when you’re right there. Listen, this was not an effort problem on either side of the ball, it was just an execution part," he told reporters on Monday. "You want to try to stay in your lanes. Sometimes when it extends that long, that’s a tough thing to do. I mean, the guy’s (Bills QB Josh Allen) moving around and all of a sudden, those lanes become skewed just a little bit.
"Listen, I appreciate the effort on it. The guy made a great play, and we’ll go back and learn from the thing and see what we can do better on that.”
But after the game, Reid still gave Allen his flowers.
"Listen, our guys, they were hustling their tail off to get to him," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said following the game. "So, he did a nice job. I give him credit for it, that's a tough one."
This game gave the Chiefs a taste of what they will face in the playoffs, because if things go the way they are looking, it could be Kansas City against Buffalo once again in the AFC Championship.
The Bills got this one, but let's see what happens next time.
