On Saturday, well, Christmas Eve, Patrick Mahomes made yet another magical play as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Seattle Seahawks in the brutally cold weather.
The Chiefs struggled on offense all day, but there was still one thing that stood out, as it always does when you have Mahomes at quarterback.
It seems like there is never a dull moment when Mahomes is on the field. I wouldn't say every play he makes is crazy, but there sure are a lot of plays where he does something we haven't seen.
On Saturday, it was him beating the edge, and rushing in for a touchdown.
“I either wanted to either throw a flat to a little hook route to (Travis) Kelce across the middle and they covered it well and I started running trying to find the edge and I was able to just get enough of the pylon," Mahomes said after the game.
"I grazed it and I knew it was close. I grazed it and I knew the rule that if you touch the pylon, you’re good so luckily enough I stayed out of bounds and was able to get in the endzone.”
There was one thing that made the play stand out, though. If you look at a still shot of Mahomes play, you will see his hand in bounds pushing himself up while his other hand extends the ball to the pylon.
In that play you will see him parallel with the ground, looking as if he is hovering above the ground. It almost reminds me of the play from the Super Bowl in 2020.
Using the hand was a masterful idea, though. I mean, who would have thought of something like that?
“No, no, no," Mahomes continued. "That was definitely not on purpose, but it shows that the wrist is a little strong. I had a little push-up position (laughter). I’m not going to say I’m the strongest guy in the world, but I’ve done a little bit to hold myself up.”
Come on Pat. We all know that was on purpose. Just admit it!
The Chiefs' offense hasn't been living up to what we know it can be as of late, but plays like this makes it a little bit better. I mean, just two weeks ago we saw Mahomes no-look flip pass to Jerick McKinnon in Denver, which is just one of the many magical things we have seen this year.
Mahomes is on another level this season, and by the looks of it, he will be the MVP. This play is one that will only help the argument.
