The Kansas City Chiefs have a history of trading up in the first round, and in the Andy Reid — Brett Veach era, it's worked out well for them. And, they could that again in the 2025 NFL Draft, signaling another potential hit in the first round..
The last few times they have done it, you can all probably guess who the players were. Just last season in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chiefs traded with their rivals, the Buffalo Bills, to get wide receiver Xavier Worthy. And, while he got off to a slow start on the year, it feels like that trade will end up working out in the Chiefs' favor. Mahomes now has a receiver with elite speed again.
Before that, the next one that comes to mind is Trent McDuffie, whom the Chiefs traded up for with the New England Patriots to get. McDuffie is now known as one of the three best cornerbacks in the league, and you could even argue in some area, he is better than the consensus best in Denver Broncos CB Patrick Surtain.
And of course, the other time they traded up, was for Patrick Mahomes, who is the best player on the Chiefs, the greatest player to even play for the Chiefs, and the second greatest quarterback of all time, already this early into his career.
On Thursday, general manager Brett Veach met with the media, and he openly admitted that he is aggressive in the first round and enjoys trading up much more than he likes trading back, which most of the time comes with gaining compensation. So, it makes sense that the Chiefs could trade up in Round 1 in the 2025 NFL Draft if it means guaranteeing that they get their guy.
And, Amazon's Next Gen Stats say that the Chiefs are one of the five most likely teams to trade up in Round 1, along with the Bills, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks.
If this were to happen, I could see the Chiefs moving up to make sure they get their offensive tackle of the future. We all know that they will end up drafting one, but where in the draft is the question at hand. If they wait too long, they will start to fall away from the impact guys at the position.
The Chiefs could be making moves next week when the draft kicks off.
