‘He’s got a good heart’ — Andy Reid got a surprise visit from one of his former pupils at Chiefs training camp
Former NFL WR Terrell Owens paid his old coach a visit.
The Kansas City Chiefs often have high profile visitors during training camp.
Sometimes they actively help out on the field, like former Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce, or just drop in to observe. The latter was the case on Thursday as Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens arrived in St. Joseph, Missouri to chop it up with his former coach Andy Reid.
Reid coached Owens from 2004-2005 while he was at the helm with the Philadelphia Eagles. The two experienced many highs and lows in their short time together. Owens had one of the best years of his career in ’04, catching 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns en route to Super Bowl XXXIX, falling short to the New England Patriots 24-21.
However, 2005 was filled with off-the-field drama, particularly with Owens and quarterback Donovan McNabb. That ultimately led to Owens being suspended multiple games, and getting released after the season. Despite the way things ended, Reid and Owens have seemed to maintain a good relationship over the years. Following Thursday’s practice, Reid had nothing but great things to say about Owens.
“He was in town,” Reid said of Owens. “Listen, it’s great to have to him. I’ve watched him grow up, and he’s a dad now. His son is with the 49ers and is doing a nice job. He’s got a daughter that’s a heck of a volleyball player. Just watching people grow I think is a great position that I’m in, to see that. And he’s got a good heart. T.O. has got a good heart.”
Owens’ son, Terique, is following in his father’s footsteps as an NFL WR. He signed with San Francisco (who drafted Terrell in 1996) as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He spent most of that season on the practice squad, and is trying to make the 49ers’ 53-man roster for the 2025 season.
Terrell came with a lot of off-field baggage throughout his 15-year NFL career, but his on-field talent was undeniable. He ranks eighth all-time in receptions (1,078), third in receiving yards (15,934), and third in receiving touchdowns (153). Terrell was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
