Raiders just got a rug pulled out from beneath them from a head coach candidate not even 24 hours after their visit
The Raiders liked Joe Brady.
The Las Vegas Raiders have been considering several head coach candidates over the last week. Seattle Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak and Denver Broncos QB coach Davis Webb appeared to be frontrunners, and both are still available.
Meanwhile, other names have surfaced alongside Kubiak and Webb. Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady and former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll have also been contenders. Yet, less than 24 hours after Vegas completed a second interview with Brady, unexpected news changed the landscape.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bills are finalizing a deal to promote offensive coordinator Joe Brady to their new head coach after firing Sean McDermott, removing Brady from consideration for the Raiders’ opening.
Brady would have been an ideal candidate if the Raiders had planned on drafting Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. He has worked with several top quarterbacks in his coaching career. During his time in college, he was the passing game coordinator for that dominant LSU Tigers team that won the National Championship with Joe Burrow, the current Cincinnati Bengals QB. He’s also coached Josh Allen, a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league.
So, the Raiders are missing out in that aspect of things, but who knows — maybe Brady was never going to get the Raiders job anyway. There are also reports that the Bills are giving Brady a five-year deal, and perhaps Vegas is reluctant to commit to that.
Given recent changes in the candidate pool, what’s next for the Raiders in their search for a head coach?
Adam Schefter has also reported that all job openings could be filled by Wednesday. This would mean the Raiders’ options are likely limited to Webb or Brian Daboll, since Kubiak is still coaching the Seahawks and is preparing for the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots.
Whatever the Las Vegas Raiders end up doing, it seems they are definitely going with an offensive-minded head coach, which only helps Mendoza. It also feels like they have a healthy mix of young, up-and-coming guys and veterans.
