Monday has been quite the news day if you’re like me, covering the Las Vegas Raiders. Jakobi Meyers requested a trade because he and the team couldn’t agree on a contract extension. Then, shortly after that news was reported, the Raiders signed former Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns wide receiver, Amari Cooper, who’s a familiar name himself.

So now, the biggest question is what the Raiders will do with Meyers? Will they honor his request and trade him? Or, will they continue to work on a deal? Trey Hendrickson, the Cincinnati Bengals’ pass rusher who held out this offseason for a new contract, requested a trade, and the Bengals ended up re-signing him Monday. So, anything is possible.

But, if they were to go the trade route, there are so many teams that make sense. But one makes the most sense out of them all in terms of teams that would be super interested in him.

Raiders could trade Jakobi Meyers to the New England Patriots

Before you say anything, make any wincing noise, or anything like that – hear me out. The Raiders are an organization that will send players somewhere that they at least would prefer, while also trying to get something great in return.

Sending him to New England may just be what he wants, because he is super familiar with it already.

It’s hard to find a team that makes more sense for Jakobi Meyers than the New England Patriots. The team desperately needs a competent wide receiver, has extra picks and the salary cap space to make that happen, and Meyers has already played for the franchise and under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Right now, the projected starting wide receivers for the Patriots are Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, and Mack Hollins. Even though rookies Kyle Williams and Efton Chism might eventually develop, it’s important for New England to build a strong infrastructure around quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots have extra fourth-, sixth-, and seventh-round picks in next year’s draft, and lead the NFL with $60.24 million in cap space. So executing the trade and extending Meyers wouldn’t be a problem. Moreover, the receiver is still 28, which means that giving him a mid-term extension isn’t necessarily a bad investment due to age. In this package, the Patriots send Kyle Dugger, a player they are already trying to trade anyway, and the extra fourth-rounder they got from the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2025 draft for moving down in the third round. The trade makes perfect sense, and from the Raiders’ side of things, getting back a fourth-rounder would be huge. That would allow them to potentially find another Dont’e Thornton Jr., for example, in a rookie in the fourth round that will start in Week 1. They also need defensive back help, with their backup situation being pretty bad in the safety room.

Dugger could be the perfect guy for the job there, and it could give him a fresh start, too.
