The Detroit Lions got some rough news on Friday morning. Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez tore his ACL on Thanksgiving and he will be out for the rest of the season.
The Lions did not waste any time finding a replacement though. They have signed former Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander off the Broncos practice squad.
The 30-year old Alexander has been in the league since 2015. He’s spent time with the Bucs, Steelers, 49ers, Saints, Broncos and Jets.
He was with both Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn on the Saints in 2020, so there’s some understanding of what he can bring from the Lions coaching staff.
In 2016 he led the NFL in tackles for the Bucs and then made the Pro Bowl the following season. Injuries put a damper on Alexander’s career and he’s been dealing with them for some time.
If he can be healthy, his ability to get stops is invaluable to a team that desperately needs linebacker help right now. Alexander has shown to be a good run stopper and has pass rush juice as well.
Because Alexander was poached from a practice squad, he is immediately part of the team’s 53-man roster and you can expect to see him play as early as next Thursday against the Packers.
