We're in NFL Draft season and the Detroit Lions are already getting to work. The Lions were on hand for both the 2025 Tropical Bowl and the Hula Bowl in Orlando last week and they talked to a good handful of players, including the Tropical Bowl MVP.
The Lions had a meeting with San Jose State defensive tackle Soane Toia after he put up a big game in the Tropical Bowl with six pressures, three sacks, and four tackles for loss. While Toia is a bit undersized for the position, he is someone who has a lot of athletic versatility. He could potentially move to the edge or he could play fullback on offense as well.
The Lions aren't dissuaded from taking an undersized player at the position either, they drafted Mehki Wingo in last year's draft and his size was one of the reasons he fell, but his pass rush juice is why the Lions took him. Toia has shown he has that.
The Lions also spoke to Boston College running back Treshaun Ward at the Tropical Bowl too.
At the Hula Bowl the Lions met with Virginia Tech receiver Ali Jennings, Iowa linebacker Nick Jackson, Minnesota defensive lineman Danny Striggow, North Dakota State offensive lineman Mason Miller, Illinois Edge Seth Coleman, and Pittsburgh safety Donovan McMillon.
Striggow is likely the guy that everyone will look at coming out of this game, but keep an eye on Nick Jackson. The Lions love linebackers who can tackle and this guy has the second-most career tackles in FBS history.
While both bowl games don't get as much hype as the Senior Bowl or the Shrine Bowl do, there are players to be found here for sure. The Lions would know. The Tropical Bowl is where they watched Trevor Nowaske. Of course, Nowaske being local also helped.
The Lions release of Za’Darius Smith sucks, but it was a necessary move
The Detroit Lions needed to take a swing at the trade deadline this past November after losing Aidan Hutchinson, and they did that when they traded with the Cleveland Browns for Za'Darius Smith. Smith made an impact in Detroit immediately. He became the team's lead pass rusher and in eight games he put up 36 […]
