The Los Angeles Chargers were the team for years that seemed to underachieve with the level of talent on their roster. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has quickly changed the fortunes around the organization, and his team is playing fast and physically. The team has clearly adopted the personality of their head coach.

For the next step in building this team, it’ll be about continuing to add skill around quarterback Justin Herbert. In my recent mock draft over at A to Z Sports, that was my area of focus for the Chargers. They added some legitimate playmakers in the two-round mock draft.

It started with their first round selection, which currently sits at No. 25 overall, where Los Angeles selected Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. Coach Harbaugh obviously has a lot of knowledge about Loveland, and reuniting them is a very interesting proposition.

Here is how I see Loveland potentially fitting in.

25. Los Angeles Chargers: Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan

Loveland reunites with Jim Harbaugh to add a valuable piece to the Chargers passing game. Quarterback Justin Herbert would love working with Loveland, who is an inviting middle of the field option with impressive body control, and smoothness out of breaks.

So far this season, the Chargers top tight end has been Will Dissly, who has hauled in 37 receptions for 352 yards and one touchdown. While Dissly has been solid, he is a replaceable player. Loveland brings dynamic athleticism to the table that the offense could really use.

Continuing to build up to the wide receiver unit could also be in play. Running back is also a sneaky need with JK Dobbins set to be a free agent. He’s been tremendous for the Chargers this year but giving a legitimate contract to a player with this type of injury history doesn’t seem like great business.

With their second round selection, the Chargers choose to select Iowa running back Kalen Johnson with the No. 58 overall selection. Johnson has been one of the breakout stars in college football so far this season, having rushed for 1,328 yards and 20 touchdowns, while also averaging 7.1 yards per carry.

Johnson is a bigger back at 6-0 and 220 pounds. While he brings a lot of power to the table, Johnson is also explosive and has surprisingly light feet. He would be a tremendous addition to that running back room.
