Chargers give Jim Harbaugh a reason to smile in a new 2025 NFL Mock Draft and it would make Justin Herbert's life easier at the same time
The Los Angeles Chargers probably have a bitter taste in their mouth after their season ended due to their poor performance in the 2024 NFL playoffs. The Los Angeles Chargers probably have a bitter taste in their mouth after their season ended due to their poor performance in the 2024 NFL playoffs.
But there was a lot to like about the first year with Jim Harbaugh as the team's head coach. They went from holding a top-five pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to a playoff team and finishing with the 22nd pick. Now, they begin to work on larger aspirations in free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft. A new A to Z Sports mock draft has the Chargers making a selection to elevate Harbaugh's offensive system, which would help make Justin Herbert's job easier at the same time.
Chargers land North Carolina RB Omarion Hampton in a new 2025 NFL mock draft

"This pick would absolutely smash. For my fantasy football friends out there, this is drool-worthy. Omarion Hamption is a special back with size, physicality, home run speed, and quick feet. Putting him in a Jim Harbaugh offense would just be straight up unfair. The Chargers need a longterm answer for their ground game, and Hampton hits it out of the park."
– New A to Z Sports Mock Draft
Harbaugh's offense was at its best when the run game was the focus. North Carolina's Omarion Hampton is a dynamic player who, in most drafts, would be viewed as the consensus number-one running back. This year, though, he has to compete with the Heisman runner-up, Ashton Jeanty. Though one NFL scout told me it's not a lock that Jeanty is the first RB off the board, Hampton has a lot of fans across the league as well.
One look at Hampton's production in North Carolina and it's easy to see why. He led the ACC in rushing yards in back-to-back seasons in 2023 and 2024 and finished with his best collegiate season by rushing for 1,660 yards and 15 touchdowns on 281 carries. His ability as a runner between the tackles and being able to bounce it out to the outside and be so shifty in space has him projected to be a true three-down back. The Chargers went with a committee approach in the backfield this past year. The lack of a true game-changing talent on the roster was a reason for that. Hampton would fix that and help Harbaugh run his ideal offense as early as 2025, which would also open up more possibilities for Herbert and the passing game.
