As a part of the NFL Global Markets Program, the Los Angeles Chargers have been granted international marketing rights in the country of Greece.
This is a continued effort by the league to build its brand all around the world. 29 teams are participating in the program in 2025 across 21 international markets. Chargers Owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos released a statement regarding bringing the game of football to Greece.
"The homeland of my family, Greece has left an eternal imprint on my heart," Spanos said. "With Ancient Greece home to the first recorded Olympic Games in 776 BC and host of the inaugural Summer Olympics in 1896, it seems only natural to bring what I consider to be the best game in the world to, quite literally, the birthplace of sport. We couldn't be more excited to connect with Greeks from all walks of life, make an impact on their communities and share our passion for the game we love."
Spanos is of Greek ancestry and was recently honored by The Hellenic Post and the International Foundation for Greece with a commemorative postage stamp. The first bit of action that the Chargers will perform in Greece will be announcing a Day 3 2025 NFL Draft pick live from its capitol city of Athens on Saturday, April 26.
An NFL game has never been played in Greece, but this is the first step in doing so sometime in the future. The league is already set to play its first ever regular season games in two different countries, starting in Ireland with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the home team in 2025, followed by the Los Angeles Rams in Australia in 2026.
