Jesse Minter won’t be calling the Los Angeles Chargers defense next season, but an important veteran piece isn’t going anywhere.

The Chargers have announced a contract extension for Teair Tart that should affect the 2026 NFL Draft plans for Jim Harbaugh’s squad.

Teair Tart signs new multi-year deal with Chargers to improve defense

The Bolts got tougher on the interior of their defensive line by keeping Teair Tart in the fold for the foreseeable future. The Chargers have signed him to a three-year, $37.5 million deal that lasts through 2028. The bruising nose tackle has been a key aspect of the defensive front for LA over the past two seasons.

Tart has started every game since joining the Chargers roster. He’s been ultra-consistent for the unit, and he also plugs a key hole to improve the DL stability.

“Tart was part of a defensive unit over the last two seasons that ranked within the top-five in scoring defense (18.9 points allowed per game), total defense (304.8 total net yards allowed per game), passing defense (195.5 net passing yards allowed per game) and third down defense (35.5 pct.).”

Los Angeles should focus on offensive line or secondary in round 1 0f 2026 NFL Draft

Adding a new nose tackle would have been on the radar for the Chargers if they didn’t lock down Tart in the long-term. Kayden McDonald from Ohio State was a consistent mock draft selection recently to make sure that they stayed talented at the NT position.

With this decision for the defensive line, I think the largest need for their defense comes at cornerback. They could add a notable CB during free agency, and that may be the smartest choice since Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart are both young options.

The most important offseason task for Los Angeles remains along the offensive line. The interior OL was the biggest concern for much of this past season, and keeping Justin Herbert upright and healthy is the most important aspect of the future outlook for Harbaugh’s team.

Regardless, Tart is a proven, experienced defender with time spent around his teammates for the Chargers. They were smart to get this deal done sooner rather than later.
