Chargers deal with brutal injury blow to key offensive player during crucial game vs. Broncos
Los Angeles suffers a tough loss versus Denver.
Depth always comes into play early and often around the NFL. For the Los Angeles Chargers, they will need offensive playmakers to step up following their latest notable injury to a skill position player.
In the first half against Denver, disaster struck for Najee Harris. While a timetable for return isn’t known for running back Najee Harris, it is a major loss for the offensive unit in LA.
Najee Harris leaves game with injury vs. Broncos
The veteran RB suffered an apparent non-contact injury against the Broncos. The Chargers have labeled it as an ankle injury, amid plenty of social media discussion about other injuries he could have suffered after seeing a replay. Harris was ruled out at halftime.
Omarion Hampton’s future on offense
This injury may only increase the playing time for the rookie running back. Najee Harris’ role had increased since he became available for the running game, but Hampton will still getting plenty of snaps as well. Harris was a bit more of a heavy-footed runner that could push a pile, while Hampton has the burst to make big plays.
Hampton had an impressive run against the Broncos in the first half to secure a touchdown in the red zone. The coaching staff is excited about his outlook in the long-term, and his usage in the short-term will get a boost if Harris is forced to miss extended time.
I also would not be surprised if the Chargers look to add another veteran depth option at RB. Harbaugh and his staff will value an experienced runner behind Hampton, just as they did with Harris. His help in the early development of Hampton and trustable running style were both important factors to how they build their offense this offseason.
