The Los Angeles Chargers need to improve their offense around Justin Herbert during the 2025 NFL Draft. That's no secret. Jim Harbaugh surely has his eyes on some offensive playmakers for sometime early in the process, and tight end could be a target for them in round one or two.
Michigan Wolverines TE Colston Loveland has been one of the most consistently-mocked prospects to the Chargers in mock drafts for months now. They may not get the opportunity to land Harbaugh's former weapon, though.
Colston Loveland's draft stock continues to rise
The Michigan tight end has plenty of fans around the draft community. He's an impressive athlete at incredible size. His receiving output, married with better blocking than some may think, is a really exciting set of talent for any NFL team.
For the Chargers, they need an upgrade at tight end quite badly. Unfortunately, it is possible that they won't even get the chance to pick Loveland, unless they trade up a notable amount in order to pick him.
Having spent the entire weekend on the phones, here are two names who'll go higher than where the consensus mock drafts have them going right now:
1. Mykel Williams EDGE 2. Colston Loveland TE
Loveland often makes it to Los Angeles at the 22nd overall pick, but now, that feels a bit less likely. The Denver Broncos pick 20th and could have interest in an upgrade at the position. Multiple teams picking in the teens may have their eyes on Loveland as well.
Loveland is going to be a fascinating player for some teams over the next few months. If you want a player who can be a lethal addition and mismatch in the passing game, he will be someone highly coveted by those teams. If you want a balanced and well rounded tight end who can block with effectiveness, that isn't what Loveland brings to the table.
There is plenty of room to grow with his frame, as he doesn't turn 21 until April. However, sheerly adding muscle isn't going to be a cure-all for those issues. The effort is there on blocking so projecting him to be better in that area isn't a crazy thought.
The Chargers should also be concerned with the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, and Seattle Seahawks as potential landing spots for Loveland, all of whom pick before them in round one.
Chargers' need at tight end
Tight end was a weakness down the stretch last season for Los Angeles. Will Dissly was inconsistent, and the addition of Tyler Conklin should not prevent the Chargers from adding talent at the position during the draft.
Loveland would immediately have an impact on offense for the Chargers as a rookie. He's arguably the top receiving threat at the position in the class and makes a ton of plays after the catch.
We will see if Loveland does go much higher than folks have expected recently. The Chargers are probably hoping that's not the case in the first round.
