The Los Angeles Chargers just won one of the most dramatic games of the 2024-2025 season. Yes, you read that correctly. Their offense and defense dominated the second half of their latest win over the Denver Broncos.
Early on, Los Angeles got punched in the mouth. Denver took a 21-10 lead into the final moments of the first half. After an interference penalty on a punt to the Chargers, they were in field goal range.
Cameron Dicker's kick entering halftime changed the entire trajectory of the game for Denver and Los Angeles. The Chargers took control.
Chargers make NFL history
With time expired, the Chargers did what no team has done in nearly fifty years. They became the first team to convert a successful free kick field goal since 1976.
In the second half after the FG make from Dicker, the Chargers outscored the Broncos, 21-3. Justin Herbert played a nearly perfect half of football, and Los Angeles' defense stepped up to pressure Broncos QB Bo Nix and shut down Denver's running game.
Who was the last player to have a successful free kick attempt like Dicker did on Thursday night? It was actually another Chargers boot, Ray Wersching.
Dicker's make truly changed the entire fell of the game. Instead of entering the half with all of the momentum, Denver had just made a costly mistake by interfering with the returner on the punt, and Los Angeles capitalized.
The historic kick by Dicker only boosted his potential Pro Bowl campaign as well. All around, the Chargers had a heckuva evening in a game that increased their playoff chances to nearly 100%.
