Chargers' dramatic improvement may actually cost them dearly in their long-term future
The Los Angeles Chargers vibe check would be at quite the high at this point. They're playing like a top team in the AFC. Jim Harbaugh has infused the organization with a sense of urgency and heart. The Los Angeles Chargers vibe check would be at quite the high at this point. They're playing like a top team in the AFC. Jim Harbaugh has infused the organization with a sense of urgency and heart. Justin Herbert has played some of his best football in 2024.
All that being said, the defense has truly stepped up in every way this season as well. Many people around social media may not discuss it as much as Harbaugh's antics or Herbert's throws, but it is the truth.
Accordingly, their leader on defense is garnering interest from around the rest of the NFL. No shocker there.
Jesse Minter's future
The first-year DC for Los Angeles is getting plenty of love from the national media. On multiple occasions, he has been mentioned as a potential head coach candidate during the upcoming offseason.
Tom Pelissero mentioned the Chargers coordinator as one of the top young names to potentially become a HC after this season concludes.
Chargers DC Jesse Minter, 41: A onetime wide receiver at tiny Mount St. Joseph University in Delhi, Ohio, Minter is part of the Michigan-Baltimore-Harbaugh connection that helped land Mike Macdonald the Seahawks' head-coaching job in January. Like Macdonald, Minter worked under John Harbaugh with the Ravens (2017-2020) and Jim Harbaugh at Michigan (2022-23) before returning to the NFL and having one of the league's best defenses. The Chargers are No. 1 in fewest points allowed (14.5 per game), tied for No. 1 in goal-to-go efficiency (50%) and No. 2 on third down (32.3%) and in the red zone (40.9%). Minter has a track record. Players respect and love him. He doesn't pretend he knows everything and is willing to learn. Jim Harbaugh is already serving as Minter's head-coaching campaign manager in media interviews. That alone should land Minter a longer look come January.

It would be a risky move for a team to make, considering his lack of NFL head coaching experience. That being said, his work in rebuilding and reengineering the defense for the Chargers has been a marvel this season.
Even without some elite talent, Los Angeles' unit plays incredibly hard and actually leads the league in points allowed per game (14.5) through eleven weeks of play.
NFL insider Mike Garafolo confirmed the interest in Minter entering this offseason.
Chargers fans will not forget the struggles of the Chargers defense before Minter arrived, either. Brandon Staley's unit was among the worst in the NFL during the prior two seasons.
As Pelissero noted as well, Minter has great connections around the league. His time with the Harbaugh brothers has taught him a plethora of lessons as far as coaching goes, but his resources extend far beyond that.
In the NFL, organizations talk…
Coaches talk. General managers talk. All of them play a role together, and many positive reviews of Minter by the current Chargers head coach, among others, will speed up his process to landing a HC gig in the near future.
Clearly, the former Michigan Wolverines assistant may make one of the biggest rises in ranks that we have seen in the history of college and NFL football.
