Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is an elite talent at his position around the NFL. There is plenty of discourse regarding the Chargers QB, though.
Some believe he is overrated due to a lack of wins, especially in the postseason. Others think that he is underrated due to a lack of talent in his supporting cast (OL, coaching staff, defense) over recent years. Some would say he's properly rated as a top talent at the QB position who needs to take another step forward in consistency and pushing his team toward the postseason.
Chargers' Justin Herbert leads NFL in important QB stat
Herbert has 7 games with go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter and overtime that resulted in a loss.
That's a mind-boggling stat that puts to shame former Chargers HC Brandon Staley. Staley's defenses have been among the league's worst over the past two seasons. The Chargers have a new regime in town, led by Jim Harbaugh now, so there's plenty of hype regarding their upgrade on staff.
Plus, his comparisons among his peers for that stat is alarming. Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa have three, while Jalen Hurts has just one. The other supporting casts have supported their QBs much better late in games.
Last season alone, Herbert had three lost comebacks, which were games where he brought the Chargers back late from a deficit to a lead, but the team still lost against Miami, Tennessee, and Green Bay. For his career, Herbert has four lost comebacks, which leads Tua (3), Burrow (2), and Hurts (0). — 365scores
Does Herbert need to get the Chargers back to the postseason and get a win soon? Absolutely. Zero playoff wins in four years is rough, but it has not been for a lack of trying or producing by LA's QB.
As a whole, Che chargers have to have a more complete charge in order to succeed. Both sides of the ball must be more consistent.
Surprisingly, special teams should be checked off there with young kicker Cameron Dicker. He's already one of the top boots in football.
He's got to get more help to achieve the goals that fans have in mind, but Herbert simply needs more "clutch help" from his teammates and coaches going forward.
