The Los Angeles Chargers learned the hard way in the postseason this year. Jim Harbaugh's first season was widely considered a success, but their Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans shown some real holes on the roster.

Pass catcher was a major issue in the playoff game for LA, along with parts of the regular season. The tight end position, in particular, showed weakness as Will Dissly struggled against Houston, and Hayden Hurst missed a lot of time in the regular season with injury.

In Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest mock draft at ESPN, Los Angeles grabs a new tight end in round one.

Chargers draft tight end

Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan

How about a seam-stretching tight end for quarterback Justin Herbert? Loveland is a tough matchup for defenses — he's 6-5, 245 pounds, and he has some speed. He had 56 catches, 582 yards and 5 TDs this season despite subpar play from Michigan's quarterback room. He played for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, too, so there's a built-in connection.

L.A. has to also look at the receiver group. Four WRs are off the board already, which is why I opted for Loveland. It's just too big of a reach to Utah State's Jalen Royals, TCU's Savion Williams or Texas' Isaiah Bond. But if one of those guys rises over the next few months, that might be the priority.

The Michigan product is an exciting, big body with the football in his hands. Not many players his size move as well as he does, and he's widely expected to be taken in round one, somewhere around this pick for the Chargers.

Loveland is ranked as a top fifteen overall prospect in the class, via the A to Z Sports big board for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Loveland is going to be a fascinating player for some teams over the next few months. If you want a player who can be a lethal addition and mismatch in the passing game, he will be someone highly coveted by those teams. If you want a balanced and well rounded tight end who can block with effectiveness, that isn't what Loveland brings to the table.

There is plenty of room to grow with his frame, as he doesn't turn 21 until April. However, sheerly adding muscle isn't going to be a cure-all for those issues. The effort is there on blocking so projecting him to be better in that area isn't a crazy thought. — Tyler Forness

Will Dissly's costly postseason drops loom large with this selection. One of Justin Herbert's interceptions went straight through his hands, and he also dropped a wide open pass that would have led to a first down for LA.

Instead, they had to settle for another field goal early in the game due to his mishap on third down.

Dissly is under contract for two more seasons as of now. Hayden Hurst is a free agent this offseason. Stone Smartt Jr. showed some nice flashes for a young tight end also, so I expect he could be a part of their depth at the position going forward.

Adding Loveland to the group makes a ton of sense and gives Herbert another notable target in the passing game for the Chargers.
