The Los Angeles Chargers are digging their heels in, along with the rest of the NFL, for this week of free agency madness. The mania has already begun, and a notable Chargers defensive lineman is expected to join the other team in LA.

Poona Ford expected to join Rams

According to Jeremy Fowler, the Rams have agreed to terms with Chargers DT Poona Ford. It's a three-year deal just under $30M with $17M guaranteed, per sources.

This news follows the update regarding edge rusher Khalil Mack. He's back with the Chargers on a one-year deal. Meanwhile, the big, fiery nose tackle inside for the Chargers exits. They'll need to find a replacement for Ford quickly.

As for the Rams, their run defense should see a boost with him joining the DL group.

His 85.1 grade from Pro Football Focus in 2024 ranked fifth among 219 qualifying interior defensive linemen. Still just 29-years-old, Ford is in the prime of his career and has finally secured the contract he has been chasing after for seven years. It's a great deal for both sides, as (roughly) $10 million per year isn't going to break the bank for the Rams. Ford will give the Rams' defense a boost in both pass rush and run defense. There are some nose tackle options on the free gent market, but Los Angeles could also look toward the NFL Draft for a potential piece at that spot. Only time will tell how they plan to replace Ford.

Ford is among the best interior players against the run. The Chargers' defensive line made improvements there this past season, but now that hole reappears on the depth chart with his departure.

Regardless, Ford clearly liked living in California. He did not have to go far at all for his new landing spot with Sean McVay and the Rams.
