The Los Angeles Chargers continue to build their roster in hopes of another playoff appearance next season. If they want to win once they get there, quarterback Justin Herbert needs more weapons in the passing game – plain and simple.
Field Yates of ESPN unveiled a new 2-round mock draft recently, and the Chargers went out of their way to help Herbert in a huge way.
Chargers' picks in latest mock draft
22. Los Angeles Chargers: Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan
This is a common projection in part because it would reunite Loveland with his former college coach Jim Harbaugh, but the fit really does make sense for the Chargers. Los Angeles lacked a movable matchup player at tight end in 2024, and Loveland is exactly that. At 6-foot-6 and 248 pounds, he is too big for defensive backs to cover, but he's also faster than most linebackers with his seam-stretching speed and nifty route running.
— Field Yates
Been a popular one for Los Angeles here. Loveland has a relationship with Jim Harbaugh already. He is worthy of a first-round selection in this class. Tight end is also a notable need, even after the Chargers signed Tyler Conklin in free agency.
Loveland would have an impact in year one for LA, and he's a better blocker than he gets credit for in most circles. Not to mention, he's an extremely fluid mover for his size and can break tackles to open up chunk gains for a passing offense.
Getting talent around Herbert is a must in this draft class, and Loveland helps out the run game in Los Angeles as well after they added Najee Harris. This may be a "boring" pick, but it is a smart one for the Chargers' future.
55. Los Angeles Chargers: Elic Ayomanor, WR, Stanford
The Chargers brought Mike Williams back this offseason, but he's 30 years old and on a one-year deal. Even after I projected tight end Colston Loveland to them in Round 1, the Chargers should be looking for WRs to slot alongside Ladd McConkey outside. Ayomanor has developmental upside thanks to his 4.44 speed and 6-foot-2 size. — Field Yates
As Yates notes, Mike Williams is back. He's also coming off multiple years of dealing with nagging injuries. He is not the same player he was even three seasons ago. Enter Elic.
The big-body wideout works hard in the run blocking game and has a knack for winning jump ball scenarios. That is a trait that not many of the current players on the WR depth chart LA have. Keep in mind that Josh Palmer is no longer in the fold, and Ladd McConkey wins reps with his route running and quick bursts.
Ayomanor is a great value here towards the end of the second round. Another nice pick for Leo Angeles via Yates.
Albeit only two picks, this would be the start of a really strong class for Harbaugh and his quarterback. Seeing these two offensive pass catcher join the fold would make Justin Herbert sleep a lot better at night entering next season.
