Los Angeles Chargers reward preseason star with a promotion that he deserved after just two weeks of the NFL season
He gets rewarded for his strong play.
You do not often see a retirement return work out particularly well around the NFL. For the Los Angeles Chargers, they’ve landed legitimate production from a veteran player who decided to hang up his cleats earlier in his playing career. Now, the team is rewarding him in a major way, and it’s well deserved.
Safety Tony Jefferson is seemingly sticking around in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.
Chargers sign Tony Jefferson to the active roster
According to Jordan Schultz, the Chargers are signing veteran safety Tony Jefferson to the 53-man roster. He was on the practice squad previously. Jefferson had a great game in Week 2 for LA, totaling five tackles, two pass deflections, and one interception.
Jefferson is an energetic defender, and his teammates have always appreciated his leadership during his pro career. The experienced safety dominated in the preseason, and it was a bit surprising to see him cut ahead of Week 1. Then, he returned to the Chargers on their practice squad shortly after.
Los Angeles was lucky to get him back on the PS, right after the rest of the NFL saw him perform quite well in the preseason. Alas, this worked out really well for both sides. Jefferson deserves a consistent roster spot, and the Chargers need him as key depth on the back end.
Added pass rush depth following Khalil Mack injury
Los Angeles has also made a couple of key moves for their defensive line and pass rush. The Chargers have signed former first-round pick Clelin Ferrell to their active roster. Additionally, LA has signed pass rusher Rashad Weaver to their practice squad.
With Khalil Mack heading to injured reserve, he will have to miss at least four games for the Bolts. With that, the Chargers are doing their best to prepare their depth for more snaps, and this additional experience could make a notable difference for the unit.
