This offseason, Jim Harbaugh got a chance to return to the NFL from the Los Angeles Chargers. Now, they are giving a former first-round pick that same sort of chance to make waves in the NFL.
The Chargers signed former first-round OL Alex Leatherwood.
Leatherwood was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021. Leatherwood has 17 starts in his NFL career with the Raiders and Chicago Bears. He also spent some time with the Cleveland Browns.
He has not been able to hold a starting role since his rookie season. That's usually not a good sign for a first-round selection.
Leatherwood was graded as one of the worst starting offensive linemen in football during that 2021 season, according to Pro Football Focus. They gave him a measly 45.0 blocking grade.
For the Chargers, they should not expect him to play a starting role. At best, he can be a veteran depth piece on the inside of their offensive line.
