The Los Angeles Chargers have made a notable decision for their offense this offseason, following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft. A starter from a season ago is involved in their latest transaction.

Chargers make decision on J.K. Dobbins

According to Ari Meirov, the Chargers have placed the unrestricted free agent tender on running back J.K. Dobbins.

Dobbins was a key piece to the Chargers' offense last season when healthy. LA signed Najee Harris during free agency and drafted RB Omarion Hampton in round one of the 2025 NFL Draft.

What is the unrestricted free agent tender?

Using the tender on Dobbins ensures that Los Angeles will not be left empty-handed if the veteran running back signs elsewhere. It is an interesting move that doesn't often get used by NFL teams nowadays.

Under the terms of the tender, the Chargers will have exclusive negotiating rights with Dobbins if he has not signed with a team at the start of training camp. He would stand to make $3.428 million if he played out the year under the tender.

If Dobbins does sign with another team, the move will still count in the compensatory pick formula for both the Chargers and Dobbins’s new team. The Browns used the same tender on wide receiver Elijah Moore. — NBC Sports

With this move, it will be intriguing to see how the RB room shakes up for Jim Harbaugh. Dobbins may remain with the team, creating a nice trio alongside Harris and Hampton.

Regardless, the depth is much improved for LA's run game, compared to last season. Injuries had a notable impact on their production in 2024, and Harbaugh is probably determined to prevent that from happening once again.
