ESPN predicted this week that the Los Angeles Chargers will make a huge splash this offseason by trading for a former Pro Bowl wide receiver.
NFL insider Jeremy Fowler predicted that the Seattle Seahawks will trade two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Chargers, giving Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert an elite weapon in the passing game.
An NFL coordinator told ESPN that Metcalf playing with Herbert would be "scary".
From ESPN: Metcalf is still in his prime at age 27 and is a challenge for opposing defensive coordinators. But Jaxon Smith-Njigba received more targets than Metcalf among Seattle receivers this season — 8.1 to 7.2 targets per game — and Metcalf, a projected 2026 free agent, likely needs a new contract, which won't be cheap.
"The Seahawks can still get good value for him, and he could pair with Ladd McConkey for a good inside-out tandem," an NFL coordinator said of a move to the Chargers. "[Justin] Herbert to Metcalf would be scary. I think [Los Angeles] will be looking to help the quarterback in a big way."
Metcalf, who turned 27 in December, is coming off a year where he missed his third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season by just eight yards (Metcalf missed two games during the season).
Pairing Metcalf with Ladd McConkey would certainly give the Chargers a lethal one-two punch in the passing game.
But is dealing Metcalf in the plans for the Seahawks?
Metcalf is entering the final year of his contract and he'll likely be looking for an extension this offseason. If the Seahawks can't work out an extension with Metcalf, then it certainly makes sense to trade the former Ole Miss wide receiver for some draft picks.
All eyes will be on the Metcalf situation this spring as this saga unfolds. The Chargers will definitely be a team to watch if Metcalf starts getting shopped by Seattle.
