The Los Angeles need to take it a step at a time when it comes to their playoff chances. The defense has been horrific at times this season, and the offense has not quite lived up to expectations when it comes to scoring points.

Regardless, they do not lack talent. So, how likely does ESPN's Football Power Index think it is that the Chargers make the postseason?

Right now, Los Angeles owns a 39% to make the playoffs. They have just a 5% to win the AFC West. That ship has probably sailed.

As far as seeding, the 5-7th seed are all on the table for LA at a similar likelihood. According to the metric, the 7th seed is most likely at 12%, while the 5th and 6th seed are at 11%. Those percentages point to the difficulty that the Chargers face after starting the season 4-5.

The Chargers' schedule is not too treacherous down the stretch. They play the Green Bay Packers in Week 11, a game they are favored in beforehand. They'll face the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12, so that will not be easy.

Their next three games following that one are against the Patriots, Broncos, and Raiders. Those are all winnable, and the game against Denver is at home.

No matter what – the Chargers must improve on defense over the final nine games of the regular season in order to improve their odds of playoff play.
