J.K. Dobbins' career had prior to this season had been defined by injury misfortune.

Dobbins left the Baltimore Ravens in free agency having failed to complete a single full season with the team after being drafted in the second round in 2020.

After seeing his 2023 season ended by a torn Achilles, Dobbins was always most likely to be forced to sign a 'prove-it' deal this offseason, and that is exactly what happened as he signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

He settled for a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Chargers that featured just $50,000 in guaranteed money, a deal that is already looking like a bargain for Los Angeles.

For Dobbins, the deal was a bet on himself, one that paid off in a big way on Sunday as he helped power the Chargers to a 27-10 win over the Cleveland Browns

Dobbins rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns as the Chargers improved to 5-3. The former Ohio State back's yardage tally took him past 600 for the season, triggering an incentive in that contract and netting Dobbins a $150,000 bonus.

Talent has never been an issue with Dobbins, who has always had the ability to make this kind of impact. However, injuries have largely robbed him of the chance to get close to 600 yards, a feat he had only previously achieved in his rookie year when he had 805 for the Ravens.

The Chargers clearly had faith Dobbins could realize his potential, and head coach Jim Harbaugh will have been able to get the opinion of his brother, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, which is likely to have been glowing.

Los Angeles' faith and Dobbins' belief in himself have been rewarded. As a focal point for an offense short on receiving talent, Dobbins now has a chance to build on his outstanding start and make up for the time injuries took away from him.
