Chargers complete deal just before the trade deadline by acquiring former first-round draft pick at major position of need
Los Angeles is getting some help for the stretch run.
The NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and the Los Angeles Chargers snuck in a deal right before the buzzer.
The Chargers have acquired offensive lineman Trevor Penning from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick.
Trading for Trevor Penning was a low-risk, high-reward move for the Chargers
Penning was a first-round draft pick for the Saints in 2022 following a solid collegiate career at Northern Iowa. Our Adam Holt of A to Z Sports New Orleans has the skinny on what Penning brings to the table.
“The Penning trade is one that didn’t surprise me too much given LA’s massive OL need following multiple injuries, including the latest to star tackle Joe Alt. As for Penning’s performance this season for New Orleans, it’s been rough. There was a chance that he’d be benched this week in favor of Dillon Radunz at guard due to his struggles since returning from injury.
“Penning began his NFL career at tackle but never found a rhythm and also dealt with multiple notable injuries. A move inside was a hopeful one since Penning is known for his power in the run game, but that rawness of his prospect profile has continue to be an error of his development so far in the pros.
“He’s struggled with being on the same note as his teammates upfront, and speed has always given him issues from defenders whether he’s played inside or outside. The Bolts are hoping that a change of scenery could help him revitalize his career. We’ll see how it plays out, but at the least, a day three pick in 2027 was a very low cost swing for the Chargers to take at the buzzer of the deadline.”
With Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt both out for the season, Trey Pipkins III and Bobby Hart are atop the Chargers’ depth chart at offensive tackle. It appears that Penning will now enter this mix despite playing guard for the Saints this season. If he can get up to speed quickly, he could become a starter, most likely on the right side. Austin Deculus and Jamaree Salyer will also factor in.
