NFL makes Los Angeles’ Week 5 loss to the Commanders hurt even worse for a pair of Chargers defenders
The blows keep coming for the Chargers.
After starting the 2025 season 3-0, the Los Angeles Chargers are suddenly on a two-game losing streak.
They were upset by the New York Giants in Week 4, then fell short to the Washington Commanders in Week 5 by a 27-10 final score. The latter will be a game not soon forgotten by two Chargers defensive players.
LB Marlowe Wax fined for roughing the kicker vs. Commanders
One of the biggest momentum-changing plays from last week’s game was when a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown by wide receiver Ladd McConkey was called back due to a roughing the kicker penalty on Wax. Washington got the ball back, then went on to get a game-tying field goal to close out the first half.
The NFL has now fined Wax $4,672 for that committing that roughing the kicker foul. It’s an unfortunate blow for the rookie, who impressed enough during training camp and preseason to make the Chargers’ 53-man roster. Wax signed with Los Angeles as an undrafted free agent this past spring. He has been a very solid special teams player, recording six total tackles, but has yet to play on defense.
DL Otito Ogbonnia fined for unnecessary roughness vs. Commanders
Fast forward to the fourth quarter, Ogbonnia was penalized for striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing under the category of unnecessary roughness against Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders went on to score a touchdown that basically closed out the game.
The league has fined Ogbonnia $6,554 for his penalty against Daniels. While it didn’t really have an impact on the outcome of the game, it’s still a regrettable development for Ogbonnia. Last week was just the second appearance of the season for Ogbonnia after he played in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He has struggled in limited action, and has yet to record a stat.
