The son of a former NFL All-Pro is already turning heads as an elite recruit, and it is going to make everyone feel very old
Former NFL All-Pro has a son with superstar upside
If you don’t like feeling old, you probably aren’t going to want to look at the recent 247 Sports rankings unveiling for the 2028 recruiting class. Inside that top 100 was San Diego (Calif.) Rancho Bernardo athlete Gaige Weddle, one of the top ranked overall athletes in the country.
If the last name looks familiar, yes, Gaige is the son of former NFL All-Pro safety Eric Weddle, who spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, and Los Angeles Rams. Across 14 total NFL seasons, Weddle was able to earn selections to six Pro Bowls and two All-Pro nods. Weddle also won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams.
The 5-11, 195-pound cover man was originally a second round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Chargers out of Utah. He spent a total of nine seasons with the Chargers organization, managing to collect 851 total tackles, 19 interceptions, and 70 pass deflections.
Following that stint, Weddle signed with the Ravens. In three seasons with the team, the talented safety made Pro Bowls in each of those seasons. Weddle hauled in another 10 interceptions and broke up 24 passes before ending his career with the Rams.
Weddle was a notable performer for the team in 2019, finishing with 108 total tackles. After opting for retirement, Weddle did return to Los Angeles for their Super Bowl run in 2021. Although he was injured in that final game, it was as close to a storybook ending as you could hope for Weddle.
In the recent recruiting rankings unveiling by 247 Sports, the younger Weddle came in as the No. 64 overall player, No. 3 athlete, and No. 4 player in the state of California in the 2028 recruiting class. It is a state that consistently produces a lot of collegiate talent, and Weddle is one of the next great players in that pipeline.
Some impressive programs have already offered Weddle, and are pursuing him at a high level. That offer list currently includes Tennessee, USC, Utah, Washington, SMU, Arizona State, BYU, Oregon State, San Diego State, and San Jose State. That list promises to expand very quickly as he heads into his sophomore year.
Despite only being a freshman, Weddle was dominant in 2024 for Rancho Bernardo. The 6-2, 175-pound athlete served as a dual threat quarterback for the team, throwing for 1,115 yards and 12 touchdowns against only two interceptions. Weddle also rushed for 635, and nine touchdowns on only 90 carries.
He was even better, arguably, on the defensive side of the football. Weddle managed to record 90 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and another fumble recovery. Defense is most likely where Weddle’s future lies.
