Staff changes come and go in the NFL. For the Los Angeles Chargers, they've stayed fairly status quo so far this offseason. They're confident in their group heading into 2025.
That being said, one of their key defensive assistants is probably about to be plucked from them to head back to the college ranks.
Chargers lose safeties coach
According to Pete Thamel, Chargers safeties coach Chris O'Leary is expected to be the next defensive coordinator at Western Michigan. He has extensive college football coaching experience.
O'Leary is a notable loss for Jim Harbaugh's staff. He's a respected assistant around the league that has blossomed over the years, coaching a handful of incredibly talented safeties, including Derwin James. It'll be his first chance to call plays at either the college or NFL level.
Now, the team, and James, must adjust. Los Angeles probably has some candidates in mind, both currently on staff and from around the NFL or CFB.
For James, he is fresh off of one of his best pro seasons so far.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl yet again and was one of the few consistent forces in the secondary for the Chargers. He's got a big offseason ahead of him, with a new curveball on his plate with this latest coaching swap.
Expect DC Jesse Minter and Harbaugh to find O'Leary's replacement in the coming weeks.
