The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a big win in Week 11 over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Next, they will face the Baltimore Ravens in a clash of current AFC playoff teams. But the NFL decided to punish Chargers star Derwin James for an illegal tackle he committed in Week 11.
Derwin James fined by the NFL for an illegal tackle vs. Bengals
In the first quarter, James went to make a tackle on Bengals running back Chase Brown, and yellow flags filled the field. James was flagged for a horse collar tackle after he pulled Brown down from behind by grabbing the back of his pads.
When watching the replay back, you can see James' tackle was, in fact, illegal. While he was only flagged for a horse collar tackle on the play, he also grabbed Brown's facemask to complete the tackle. The NFL believed the flag wasn't enough, deeming the tackle to be "Unnecessary Roughness" and fined the Chargers safety $16,883.00.
Of the 19 fines handed out by the league from Week 11, James' tied for the second largest. He wasn't the only Charger to be fined this week, with Otitio Ogbonnia being hit with a $5,915.00 fine for a hit he committed to Bengals Joe Burrow in which the league deemed he came down on the quarterback, with too much of his body weight.
