The Los Angeles Chargers could get their prized free agent signing back as General Manager Joe Hortiz gives positive update regarding injury
Chagers running back Najee Harris could be back for week one base don latest update.
The Los Angeles Chargers could have their new running back on the field sooner than expected. General manager Joe Hortiz expressed optimism Saturday night that Najee Harris will be ready when the Chargers open the season in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Harris has been sidelined all preseason after a July 4 fireworks accident that landed him on the non-football injury/illness list. The incident reportedly caused a “superficial” eye injury, according to his agent, Doug Hendrickson. While the Chargers have remained tight-lipped on specifics, Harris has been gradually working his way back.
“Najee’s doing great, going through all the medical processes,” Hortiz said during CBS’s broadcast of the team’s preseason finale against the 49ers. “But he’s on track, and I think he should be able to go, hopefully in Week 1.”
That’s a more confident stance than head coach Jim Harbaugh has shown throughout camp. True to form, Harbaugh has avoided giving injury details, repeatedly telling reporters that updates will come only when required by league rules.
“When Najee’s ready to play, he’ll be ready to play,” Harbaugh said earlier this week. “Right now, to take it past today would be going over the legal limit.”
Harris returned to light drills on August 12 and has since been seen training on the side with athletic staff. Often wearing a tinted visor or sunglasses, his eye remains shielded from public view. The only glimpse came via his Snapchat on August 6, showing his right eye shut, though Harbaugh has insisted he can open it.
The former Steelers back has been one of the NFL’s most durable players, never missing a game in his career. That durability was a big factor in the Chargers’ decision to acquire him this offseason.
Now, just weeks after his injury scare, it appears Harris has a realistic chance to line up with his new team in one of the league’s most anticipated openers
