The Los Angeles Chargers took another hit on the offensive line Sunday when rookie tackle Joe Alt went down early in the Week 4 matchup against the New York Giants. Alt left the game in the first quarter with what high ankle sprain. Alt had an MRI Monday which confirmed the injury.

The injury came on Los Angeles’ second offensive series when Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux crashed into Alt’s right leg. The rookie could walk to the sideline before being carted back to the locker room for further evaluation.

Potential length of absence

Recovery timelines vary with high ankle sprains: mild cases can heal in a week or two, but more severe grades often sideline players for 4–8 weeks and, in the worst scenarios, may require surgery. With that, there is a chance Alt is placed on I.R.

In Alt’s absence, Austin Deculus stepped in at left tackle. The Chargers could stick with him moving forward, or explore the free agent market if Alt’s MRI confirms a long-term absence.

Alt’s potential loss is a particularly tough blow given the team’s recent injuries up front. Rashawn Slater was already lost for the season with a torn patellar tendon, forcing Alt to move to left tackle. On top of that, starting right guard Mekhi Becton missed Sunday’s contest while in concussion protocol.

With multiple starters down, the Chargers’ offensive line depth will be tested as they try to keep Justin Herbert upright and maintain their hot start.
