Trey Lance is a case study for why reps and instincts matter at the quarterback position.

A player with a very limited college career, Lance was the third overall pick by the 49ers in 2021; however, his inclusion on this third team already indicates the direction of his early career.

Luckily for Lance, he has a shot to turn everything around, starting on Thursday…

Trey Lance to start Hall of Fame game for Chargers

The announcement came from Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who added that Lance will play through the first half and into the third quarter. It’s easy to forget that Lance is still only 25 years old and that at this time last year, he was making a lot of plays in Cowboys training camp, and that the 49ers, who have been to two Super Bowls in the past six years, thought Lance was worthy of the third pick in the draft.

Arm talent, size and athleticism, Lance has all of it. What he didn’t have coming into the league, however, was experience. And if you don’t have experience as a quarterback when you come into the NFL, you better have elite instincts and the ability to ad-lib or adapt on the fly.

Unfortunately, Lance never showed that in the Bay Area. He had flahses, but between injury and inconsistency, the team moved on from him, and he has been relegated to a backup role in the league. But Thursday night offers a chance to change that.

Sure, it’s a meaningless exhibition game where he will likely be facing players who may not even make the Lions roster. But the whole league will be watching on Thursday night. Not only live but via film after. League execs, pro scouts, even people on the college side.

It’s all hands on deck when it comes to seeing what else is out there in the preseason.

It’s up to Trey Lance to prove he’s worthy of another shot.
