Stetson Bennett has made his return to the football scene after missing the entirety of his rookie season with the Los Angeles Rams.
The former 128th overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft was originally expected to be the backup to Matthew Stafford, with some hoping that he may eventually achieve a starting position following a storybook career at Georgia.
Instead, Bennett did not touch the field at all and was absent due to undisclosed personal reasons.
It appears Bennett is on his way back to returning now, though, after he went through offseason workouts and is now training in Dallas, Texas, with some of the same trainers who have worked with Kansas City Chiefs standout quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart gave an update on the status of his former signal-caller at an event in Macon, Georgia on Monday.
“Stetson is doing well," Smart said. "He went back to Dallas where he trained last year. He trained with Patrick Mahomes’ trainers and different people there. He wanted to go back to that same footprint where he was training previously.”
It seems unlikely for the time being that Bennett will have a chance to get back on the roster with the Rams any time soon, especially after the signing of Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year deal.
The last time Bennett was with the Rams, he had his highs and lows in the preseason, going 30-for-62 passing with 307 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions over those outings.
“The Rams still have him there (in Dallas), they have gotten other quarterbacks, but He’s hopeful that he gets an opportunity there or that he’ll get picked up by somebody else,” Smart continued. “He’s been at our place during the season and he went out to Dallas to train with the other rising draft picks. So he trained with a group that was one year below him.”
It will be interesting to see what is next in Bennett's journey and how much it involves the Rams, but there's hardly a question that he can earn a roster spot on an NFL team if he remains on this path.
