Rams HC Sean McVay will aim to use a key advantage over the Jaguars to show Liam Coen who’s still top dog at playcaller
The mentor get’s his first shot at the prodigy.
There was a time not too long ago, when Liam Coen was coordinating the offense of the Los Angeles Rams. 2022 to be exact. Following a brief stop with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the same role, Coen took over at HC for the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, and he has the team off to a hot start at 4-2.
A lot of the core concepts, like route combinations, run game schemes, and personnel packages that Coen learned under McVay are all over the Jaguars tape. But McVay has more than experience on his side in this game.
Because not only is McVay the architect of the scheme, he has something that Liam Coen doesn’t at quarterback, and he will be looking to leverage that against the rookie head coach and his defense.
Matthew Stafford creates an edge for Rams vs. Jaguars
As of publication, Puka Nacua has missed practice this week with his ankle sprain and may have a tough time getting ready for an overseas game, which essentially is a whole day ahead when accounting for the time difference.
But Matthew Stafford is the rising tide that lifts all boats. He looks as sharp as ever, and the offense will still have key playmakers like Davante Adams and Kyren Williams at their disposal. Better yet, Stafford will be playing a defense that has been swiss cheese on the backend.
Right now, the Jaguars’ passing defense is ranked 30th in the league. They let up over 256 yards passing on average, and have let up an average of over 300 yards in their last three games. Against a Sean McVay-led offense and with names like Stafford and Adams out there, it feels like a recipe for disaster for the Jags.
And as much as you would like to say ‘well, it could be shootout and Coen can show his play-calling prowess on the other side,’ Brian Thomas Jr. has been inconsistent, Brenton Strange is out and Trevor Lawrence has been up and down to start 2025.
Oh and the Rams defense ranks eighth in the league in terms of passing, allowing under 200 yards a game. So perhaps the overseas nature of the game throws a wrinkle in things, but right now, the Rams and Sean McVay have a clear advantage.
