The future of the Rams is very interesting to look at. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is getting older and was answering questions about his future with retirement in his near future. The other intriguing player that helped win their Super Bowl in 2021 is wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
After missing significant time this season with injury, Kupp was pivotal in the Rams' run to the NFC West title and nearly beat the Eagles to make the NFC Championship Game. He makes a formidable duo with superstar wide receiver Puka Nacua.
On Monday, Kupp answered questions about his future with the certainty that he will play but left it open-ended about where.
"I feel like I've got a lot of good football left in me," Kupp said in the Rams' final open locker room session of the season. "I'll be playing football next year. That much I know.
"Who knows what's going to happen. That's out of my control. And we will see what it's going to be. … I don't have any clarity on what that's going to look like or anything like that. So yeah, obviously would love to be in L.A., but I don't know what that's going to look like."
Kupp just finished his age-31 season and will have a salary cap hit of $29,780,000 next season. The Rams don't have many options to save money. Of that nearly $30 million in salary cap hit, they would save just $7,520,000 by cutting him before June 1st. However, they could save an additional $5 million by trading him, with the new team absorbing a total of $20 million in salary and roster bonus.
Would the Rams have a market to trade Kupp? The wide receiver class in the NFL Draft isn't very strong, and Kupp could be a really solid number two/slot on a playoff team. The Rams have plenty of salary cap space to keep Kupp, as they have a projected $46,601,722 in cap space.
The next seven weeks will be very interesting when it comes to the future of Kupp and the Rams.
