The Los Angeles Rams will be hoping to build on this season's run to the Divisional Round in 2025, but they will seemingly have to attempt to do so without one of their top offensive assistants.
Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, Rams offensive assistant/passing game specialist Nate Scheelhaase has emerged as the leading candidate for the offensive coordinator position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Wilson cited multiple sources predicting that Scheelhaase will ultimately be hired by new Jaguars head coach Liam Coen.
Should he indeed be hired by the Jaguars, Scheelhaase won't be expected to call plays, with that responsibility sure to stay with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Coen.
And it won't be long before he and the Rams renew acquaintances, as the Rams are scheduled to face Jacksonville on the road in 2025.
Scheelhaase was only hired by the Rams last offseason having worked his way up the coaching ladder at Iowa State, where he had coached in a variety of roles on the offensive side of the ball since 2018.
Los Angeles hired him after his lone season as the Cyclones' offensive coordinator in 2023.
In 2024, he was part of a Rams offensive staff that helped Los Angeles finish 10th in DVOA, which measures per-play value. The Rams were 10th in passing DVOA and 11th on the ground, per FTN Fantasy.
Over the years, Rams head coach Sean McVay has seen several former assistants go on to head coaching roles, his coaching tree on the offensive side featuring Kevin O'Connell, Zac Taylor and Matt LaFleur.
It may still be some time before Scheelhaase becomes a head coach, but his seemingly imminent move to Jacksonville is once again testament to McVay's ability to develop coaches.
In the immediate future it leaves McVay with a hole to fill on his staff, though he does at least still have his quarterbacks coach and tight ends coach in place after Dave Ragone and Nick Caley were passed over for the Buccaneers offensive coordinator job.
