The Miami Dolphins took a sizeable step towards keeping their stout front intact on Sunday, reaching an agreement on a contract extension with DL Zach Sieler.

According to Adam Schefter, the deal is a three-year extension worth up to $38.65 million with $20 million guaranteed.

A seventh-round draft pick by the Ravens in the 2018 NFL Draft, Sieler signed with the Dolphins off waiver in December 2019.  He signed a three-year contract extension in November 2020, with his 2023 base salary set for $2.5 million, per Spotrac.  Spotrac had his market value listed at 3 years, $29.8 million.  As such, Sieler's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, got Sieler a very solid pay day.

And after last night's defensive showing, it's not hard to understand why a deal got done.  The Dolphins were without both Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler last night, and the Dolphins' starting defense was pushed around by the Jaguars starting offensive line. Sieler has earned a 78.3 or better Pro Football Focus run defense grade in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

Now, the attention turns to a couple of different moves.  Will the team reach an extension with their other defensive lineman waiting on a deal, Christian Wilkins?  What will this do to their ability to sign Jonathan Taylor to a long-term deal, whom they are pursuing aggressively?

The next 48 hours as the Dolphins trim their roster to 53 will be very intriguing to watch.
