Sully sees it too, gang.

INDIANAPOLIS — The new leadership of the Miami Dolphins made their obligatory rounds in the media on Tuesday at the annual Scouting Combine.

General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan spoke first to the local media in a private scrum, then to the football world at the podium. And, in both instances, Sullivan offered pretty clear glimpses into his mindset for the roster. There’s no shortage of intriguing snippets from Sullivan — but one of the most affirming things that the new general manager talked about ties back to a popular complaint fans have had with the roster over the past several seasons. In response to a question from Mike Cugno of CBS4 during the private session, Sullivan reportedly told the press that Miami will be getting bigger at wide receiver.

Dolphins plan to get bigger at wide receiver, per GM Jon-Eric Sullivan

“We will make a conscientious effort to maybe be a little bigger in that room…Waddle and Malik (Washington) will help (the room). To say we’re going to have a room of 5’9” guys would be a lie.” — Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan

Miami’s wide receiver room has been anchored by sub-six-foot receivers like Tyreek Hill, Waddle, Washington, Braxton Berrios, and more over the past four years — leaning fully into speed but inviting teams to get physical with them at the line of scrimmage and costing the Dolphins some valuable “oomph” with their run game support from the position. Fans have noticed, too.

The emergence of Jonnu Smith and then Darren Waller and Greg Dulcich as pass catchers has helped to provide a new element in the passing game over the last two seasons, but the overall passing attack has been deficient versus the early Mike McDaniel years. Add in the struggles in the red zone, and size should rightfully be a part of the initiative this offseason at wide receiver. It sounds like Sullivan is committed to addressing exactly that.
