The Miami Dolphins may be on the verge of doing what was once considered unthinkable. Now sitting at 6-8 and with the team’s playoff hopes officially extinguished, it’s time to look at the remaining three games a little differently.

It sure seems that embattled head coach Mike McDaniel is doing exactly that. During his day-after press conference on Tuesday afternoon with the South Florida media, McDaniel left the door open for a potential major change.

Tua Tagovailoa‘s status as the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins is, officially, in question.

“We need to have better play at that position,” said McDaniel as a part of his address to the media, rendering Tagovailoa‘s status as a highly-paid quarterback as secondary to his play for the first time in the McDaniel era.

“I think the quarterback play last night was not good enough. So, for me, everything is on the table,” said McDaniel when asked if a quarterback change this weekend was a possibility.

“I think we’re in the process of game planning for the Cincinnati Bengals, so in that process, we’re trying to determine who will give us the best chance to win. I’ll probably give you more clarity on that tomorrow…I would expect (the decision) to be tomorrow.”

This has felt like a long-shot possibility, but one you couldn’t completely dismiss. Now, with the team’s fate officially sealed, McDaniel has opened Pandora’s Box.

What’s fascinating is that even entertaining the conversation changes the perception of how well Tagovailoa’s hefty guaranteed salary will (or won’t) keep him safe for the 2026 season. With Miami on the hook for major finances, it would always be a bold move to transition away in 2026. The Dolphins have taken the first step to doing that by leaving the door open for a quarterback change over the final three games.

Will they take the second step tomorrow by officially announcing a change? Is this, in and of itself, a point of no return with their relationship with Tagovailoa and a viable encore in 2026?

We’ll find out soon enough. But for now, McDaniel has rattled the foundation of Miami’s offense to the core with an acknowledgement that Miami’s not getting enough out of its starting quarterback.

With jobs on the line, all bets are off. The bigger question now is whether Miami’s prior $212 million bet on Tagovailoa will bring McDaniel down with it.
