The Dolphins are focused on a new blueprint but their latest signing renews their claim as the NFL’s speed kings
We don’t want the Dolphins to be about JUST speed. But the speed helps!
The Miami Dolphins are, officially, reclaiming the title of the fastest team in the NFL.
Speed isn’t everything. We’ve watched the Dolphins organization learn that the hard way over the past few years as the team has fought tooth and nail (without success) to beat the allegations of being a finesse football team. New leadership is in place for Miami and their mission statement is focused on a few initiatives: finding a long-term solution at quarterback and building the roster from the inside out. Step 1 towards those goals was completed with the signing of Malik Willis and step 2 is a work in progress. But in their bid to fill out the rest of the roster, Miami has landed an offense weapon that will simultaneously help sustain that title of the NFL’s speed demons.
Dolphins reportedly agree to terms with speedy wide receiver TuTu Atwell
Atwell was once a second-round draft choice by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 NFL Draft. His pre-draft profile exploded thanks to a blazing fast 4.39s 40-yard dash — and now he comes to Miami as a fresh infusion of speed to go along with WR Jaylen Waddle, RB De’Von Achane, and QB Malik Willis.
Atwell’s production with the Rams never lived up to his draft stock, but he did enjoy two productive seasons as a vertical speed threat in the Rams’ offense in 2023 and 2024 — he combined for 1,145 yards and 3 touchdowns in those two seasons combined. 2025 proved to not be ask kind to Atwell as the Rams embraced a heavier set of base personnel packages and also accommodated WR Davante Adams in their ranks.
Atwell, who is 26 years old and hails from Miami originally, is coming home. And he’ll help the Dolphins retain a title that they’ve held for several seasons. Even if it isn’t the most important thing, it’s still a helpful thing to have at the end of the day. As long as it’s paired with the right other pieces of the roster, it can still be a great thing. But for now, Atwell is a field-stretcher who can help add to Miami’s ranks in an otherwise thin wide receiver corp behind Waddle.
