The Miami Dolphins‘ front office structure is starting to take shape.

The hire of Jon-Eric Sullivan midway through January has since brought several revelations, including that former interim general manager Champ Kelly would be continuing to hold a position with the organization. Former Falcons executive Kyle Smith was hired as the team’s assistant general manager as well — and now, a former NFL general manager has been added to the ranks, as well. Reports on Monday evening indicate that former Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson has been hired to a senior personnel executive post in Miami.

Dolphins hire former Titans general manager Jon Robinson to front office role

Robinson has been formally out of the league since 2022, when he was relieved of his duties in Tennessee. The Titans’ franchise posted four postseason appearances in Robinson’s seven-year tenure as the general manager, including an AFC Championship Game appearance in 2019 with former Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill at the helm. The Titans additionally secured a No. 1 seed in the AFC in 2021 before falling to the eventual AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals in the Divisional Round.

Robinson’s tenure was marred by poor drafting at the end of his time in Tennessee, plus the decision to trade wide receive AJ Brown. The team attempted to replace Brown with first-round rookie Treylon Burks in a move that quickly went nuclear and the Titans moved on from Robinson in December — just days after a blowout loss to Brown’s new team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

The AJ Brown transition was the final nail in his GM tenure

The reaction of then-Titans head coach Mike Vrabel in the draft room said it all. As the Titans finalized sending AJ Brown to the Eagles for 1st and 3rd round draft picks, an exacerbated Vrabel pushed away from the table and walked to the end of the room, shaking his head in disgust. Later in the year, Vrabel would publicly throw shade at the deal by throwing the rest of his pass catchers under the bus.

“I don’t what else we would do…throw it 50 times? I mean, who the (expletive) would we throw it to?’’

Robinson was fired a month later. It proved to be a catastrophic decision that further compounded truly horrid drafting for Tennessee in the final three years of Robinson’s tenure with the team.

The early track record in the draft with the Titans was actually quite good

Robinson took over a three-win team in 2016 and the Titans subsequently posted six straight winning seasons. That work was done in large part with some strong choices in the draft. Robinson’s early career picks with the Titans included the following players from 2016 through 2019:

  • OT Jack Conklin
  • RB Derrick Henry
  • SAF Kevin Byard
  • DT Austin Johnson
  • WR Corey Davis
  • CB Adoree’ Jackson
  • TE Jonnu Smith
  • LB Rashaan Evans
  • EDGE Harold Landry
  • DT Jeffery Simmons
  • WR AJ Brown
  • SAF Amani Hooker

His roots are tied significantly to the AFC East

Robinson’s start in the NFL came as an Area Scout for the New England Patriots in 2002. By 2009, he was New England’s Director of College scouting. He ended up in Tampa Bay after that with another former Patriots scout, Jason Licht, overlapping with Licht for two of Robinson’s three seasons in Tampa before getting the Titans gig. During his time as the Director of College scouting in New England, the Patriots drafted names such as:

  • Safety Patrick Chung
  • Defensive back Darius Butler
  • Offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer
  • Defensive back Devin McCourty
  • Tight end Rob Gronkowski
  • Linebacker Brandon Spikes
  • Offensive tackle Nate Solder
  • EDGE Defender Chandler Jones
  • Linebacker Dont’a Hightower
