The Minnesota Vikings made a surprise roster move on Thursday afternoon when they waived cornerback Dwight McGlothern from the active roster.

It’s quite a surprising move from the Vikings. Right now, the roster only has three active cornerbacks: Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, and Fabian Moreau. It’s wild that an NFL team only has three cornerbacks on the active roster in the year 2025, because passing is such a major factor in today’s game.

Latest roster move raises questions about Kwesi Adofo-Mensah

It’s fascinating that the cornerback position is as shallow as it is for the Vikings. If one of the starters gets hurt, Brian Flores’ defense could be in a catastrophic spot. Now, they do have three cornerbacks on the practice squad in Shemar Bartholomew, Tyrek Funderburk, and Zemaiah Vaughn, but it’s still an alarming element when it comes to roster construction.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah deserves a lot of questions about his roster construction. Why wasn’t cornerback more of a priority? Why is a practice squad player from the beginning of the season now CB3? It’s a fascinating question where the answer is complicated.

The Vikings’ defense under Brian Flores doesn’t use three cornerbacks very often with just 188 snaps from their depth cornerbacks.

  • Jeff Okudah: 93
  • Fabian Moreau: 64
  • Dwight McGlothern: 31

Flores just plays a lot of base personnel with a lot of their nickel packages being big nickel with Theo Jackson playing 404 snaps as the now safety three. Overall, its a tough situation for the Vikings to deal with if one of their cornerbacks gets hurt, which could easily happen. The move itself is likely to bring back Ryan Kelly for this Sunday’s game, but it’s still leaves a void on the roster. They could end up having a catastrophe on their hands, and Adofo-Mensah will be faulted for it with his roster building.
