Infamous quote from Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell on J.J. McCarthy laid the groundwork for a change at quarterback
The end of the organizations fail young quarterbacks quote set the table for Kevin O’Connell to potentially move on from J.J. McCarthy.
This offseason, the Minnesota Vikings are set to add competition at quarterback. J.J. McCarthy struggled throughout the season, and head coach Kevin O’C0nnell made it clear they will be adding competition.
“I absolutely want a competitive situation,” said O’Connell. “Obviously, J.J. [McCarthy] is going to be a major, major emphasis for our staff and our team and me personally, and we’ll figure out what that looks like as we navigate the early part of this offseason when it comes to managing the roster.
“I think ultimately, we’ve got to decide how to not only continue J.J.’s progression, allow him to continue to ascend as a young player, 22-years-old with 10 starts, but at the same time, like I said, I think the competition in that room will only enhance our entire team.”
Kevin O’Connell’s quote continues to resonate
One of the more important quotes that O’Connell has made during his tenure with the Vikings has been about how organizations fail young quarterbacks.
“No guy comes out of college the same these days, how they see the field, what you’re going to try to teach them from a standpoint of your progressions, and I just think as a whole, there’s not enough emphasis put on the organization’s role in the development of the position,” said O’Connell on The Rich Eisen Show in September of 2024. “Meaning, I do believe this. I believe that organizations fail young quarterbacks before young quarterbacks fail organizations. And that’s not there’s no specific example in my mind that I could give you of a team or a quarterback just overall 30,000 foot view.”
It’s no secret that it’s been a big reason why the Vikings are talked about sticking with McCarthy. In the 10-game sample size we have, he struggled massively early on, but thrived in his final four starts, putting together an encouraging sample of play going into next season.
Second part of infamous Kevin O’Connell quote could signal a willingness to move on
Even so, his entire body of work is very concerning for the Vikings. O’Connell is firmly on the hot seat going into the season, and it’s a big reason why there is a real discussion about potentially replacing him going into next year.
The next part of that quote has O’Connell identifying issues with the development process.
“I think it’s important to understand that every single one of these guys is on a journey, a very difficult journey, that they need the support, they need the teammates around them. They need the systems in place to ultimately try to maximize who they are and what their potential is, because you’re still drafting players rich off of potential. And then everything that happens from that moment to when that potential becomes is really on the organization, if you’ve got the right guy that you’re bringing in,” said O’Connell.
Everything he says above makes complete sense, but what he said next is fascinating regarding the entire situation.
“I do believe there’s some times where things just don’t work out, and then getting a chance to kind of wipe the slate clean and get a restart, while still using your previous experiences to kind of shape you know how you’re going to work, why you’re going to work, why things are important to you, will only make guys better in the end, and I’ve seen some examples of that in our league as well over the last few years.”
That was in regard to former Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold’s success early on. He saw a lot of trials and tribulations throughout his career. It took having those issues to shape his career before he was able to have that success with the Vikings and the following year by winning the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks.
Is McCarthy’s tenure with the Vikings the same as Darnold’s with the New York Jets? You can argue that McCarthy has failed the Vikings by missing 25 of a possible 35 games with the organization, and O’Connell could view his time in Minnesota in a similar vein to Darnold’s Jets tenure, and he needs a fresh start to be successful.
If they do make the call, we can point back to this quote as our first warning sign.
